Worried. I have testicular cancer, tender hard lump three years

Hello guys, first time poster! I'm from United Kingdom, hello once again.

Cut a long story short, three years ago I noticed a tiny hard lump on my right testicle. The size of a pinhead. In the space of three years, The lump has tripled in size. Around one month ago I have been getting bizarre symptoms. My right testicle is very tender to touch, I have complete loss of appetite, dull aching sensation in my lower back. And slight shortness of breath. Slight stinging sensation when passing water and Ejaculation. Please note I have received a number of ultrasounds over the space of three years and have a number of cysts in both epidermis... My concern is the lump on my right testicle was never detected in the ultrasounds.. Last year I did see a urologist and he did feel the lump, and confirmed it was on the surface of the testicle, he was under the impression it was a cyst. Although he did not do an ultrasound... I recently went to accident and emergency due to my pain and symptoms and now awaiting emergency ultrasound and emergency urology referral.. I have also had and urine sample taken which has come back clear.

I have a few questions. If anyone could answer...

Is it possible the ultrasound was unable to detect the lump because it was too small?

When a testicle is infected with cancer does the whole testicle show up as a solid mass?

If my next ultrasound is unable to detect the lump. What should I do?

Is it still possible to have a cancerous lump which is unable to be detected, even though the testicle looks completely normal on ultrasound?

I'm really concerned, because I have had the lump for three years now and only recently been getting these symptoms. I guess all I can do now is wait for the ultrasound and urology appointment, which is 2 or 3 weeks away

I recently had an ultrasound on my stomach because I damaged my abdominal muscle belly in a sporting injury, I don't suppose that would find any abnormalities in a stomach region with regards to the organs?

it's probably worth mentioning also, my left leg has been going completely numb on and off, for the past two days... I'm slightly concerned because I'm pretty sure it's connected towards the back pain... Some type of compression on the nerves?

Apologies for this poorly constructed message, I'm using a voice recognition program to control my PC because I have repetitive strain injury on both arms
. Thanks very much!!
  • Thanks for your support jadziadax, I really appreciate it.

I did manage to get the papers for the blood tests also for the X-Ray, I just need to book the x-ray and get my blood taken at the local hospital. Unfortunately my regular doctor was fully booked, so I had no alternative in whom I saw

I must admit I'm starting to have feel alot worse, I have a terrible headache and also my ears seem to be pulsing away like tribal drums... My urology appointment is in two weeks, Still awaiting ultrasound appointment.
It seems to be playing on my mind quite a lot, constantly having bad compulsive scenarios run through my head ha..

  • I am so sorry that you are so stressed by all of this. Unfortunately, its just a question of waiting for the dates to come around. We have ALL been where you are now. The waiting is terrible, and it does not ever get any easier. Try some lavendar oil preparations/spray/candle etc in the room, as that can be very relaxing, or listen to all your old music, take long walks, or anything to distract you from thinking the worse. We all do it, [worry too much] but whether you worry or not, or stress yourself out or not, its not going to change a thing. So, try and put your energy into something useful or calming. I know it sounds really trite, but I don't mean it that way. You will make yourself ill if you keep on like this.

What might also be useful is to keep a diary of symptoms. It can be useful for the Medics to identify patterns, and good for you also, as you can see on any given day what was going on. It might also shift your attention from worrying, to concentrating just on the facts. Have a think about it.

Always around if you want to bend my ear at all. Take real good care of yourself.

With regards and best of wishes as always

  • I don't know what to do, for the past three days I have been experiencing numbness in my left leg.. My back pain has worsened dramatically.. Feels like someone is compressing.. Sticking their fingers into my glands underneath my right ear, I feel like I'm struggling to speak slightly.. Also, my face feels slightly number and tingly.. I just have this feeling if I go to accident and emergency they will send me away.. I have currently been twice already in the space of a week due to my symptoms increasing,,, and they said they can't do anything about it.. Which means, I'm not being taken seriously. help?

  • Hi James

Sorry to hear that you are not so good at the moment. Is your regular GP any way better than the last one you saw? Would s/he give you an examination and/or refer you to Orthopaedic Dept? It does sound more like a trapped nerve or something similar. If symptoms are worsening, then I would strongly suggest you try this first. Impress on the GP how your symptoms have gotten worse, the fact that A&E could not help when you were desperate [play it up a little...] and that it is increasingly incapacitating you. Do you think this line of reasoning would work?

You don't need additional worries on top of everything else. Try the GP and see what happens. Failing that, is there any kind of 'Well Man Clinic' or mobile clinic, or drop in centre anywhere near you? I don't live in the UK, so not quite certain which areas have what facilities - I do know that some are better than others - Maybe a look at your local guide to NHS services on the net would pull up something?

Sorry I can't be any more helpful for you, sometimes its frustrating, but I hope you can get sorted out soon. Do let me know how you get on, I will be waiting to hear.

Best of luck, and look after yourself.

With regards and best of wishes as always

  • I definitely think the back pain is related to the numbness... Something must be inflamed and compressing a nerve,. I was advised to go to accident and emergency if I was still experiencing numbness, although I can't see them doing much. Unfortunately they wont offer scans unless the patient is considered extremely urgent. Maybe I should exaggerate my condition slightly... Waiting a week for this appointment is driving me insane. Thanks again for your help and support

  • Hello everyone just a little update, my blood tests came back clear.. I had my urology appointment today, the urologists was under the impression the lump was a torted hydatid of morgagni?? And was adamant it wasn't testicular cancer, which is a relief.. Although he is pushing forward the ultrasound appointment to speed things up.

  • If it is a torted hydatid of morgagni it's benign and self-limiting.  But excrutiatingly painful I believe.  Poor you.  Ouch!

    Good 'ol Wiki says this:

"Although it has no physiological function, it can be medically significant in that it can, rarely, undergo torsion (i.e. become twisted), causing acute one-sided testicular pain and may require surgical excision to achieve relief. 1/3 of patients present with a palpable "blue dot" discoloration on the scrotum. This is nearly diagnostic of this condition. Although if clinical suspicion is high for testicular torsion, a surgical exploration of the scrotum is warranted. Occasionally a torsion of the hydatid of Morgagni can produce symptoms mimicking those created by a testicular torsion; a torsion of the hydatid, however, does not lead to any impairment of testicular function."

  • I must admit I'm still slightly concerned, I've read a lot of stories on the Internet of misdiagnosis.. I guess peace of mind won't appear until ultrasound.

Thanks for everyone's support, I will keep you posted!
