Referred to Breast Clinic

Hi,

I know so many people on here are probably in this position right now.

I am 37 and have 3 children. I have been referred to the breast clinic because I have a lump in the tail of my breast and the doctor notes it was particularly vascular around that area - I hadn't noticed this until she had pointed it out because I am pretty vascular anyway.

Anyway, I am reading Dr Google and it appears in keeping with inflammatory breast cancer. I don't have any breast lumps that I can feel - the lump is sort of in the armpit but on the chest, if that makes sense. I had noticed it a couple of months ago but thought it was gym related!!

From knowledge, no women in my family have had cancer. Although I am aware cancer can be sporadic.

I am just looking for advice/guidance/experiences please x

  • Hello Piglet1012 and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

I'm sorry to hear about the lump you've found and that you've been referred to the breast clinic. I know this must be a very scary and worrying time, but try not to panic or assume the worst if you can. Always easier said than done I know, especially when consulting Dr Google, but try to remember that the information you find on there is very generalised and will not necessarily apply to your individual situation.

As you've mentioned, a lot of members within our community have been in this position so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to offer their support and advice.

I'm not sure from your post if you've been referred before but if not then I hope this information I've found on what happens at a breast clinic appointment will help you feel more prepared.

You can also talk things through with one of our nurses on 0808 800 4040. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you whilst you wait.

We're thinking of you Piglet1012 and will have our fingers crossed for a good outcome.

    All the best,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Piglet,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear about the lump that you've found and know only too well the concern that this can cause. You will usually get an appointment through for the breast clinic within 2 weeks from the date of your referral, although the actual appointment date can be a little further away. Not all lumps are cancerous, but you are just as well to get it checked out. Many turn out to be benign Fibroadenoma or cysts,

The first piece of advice I would give you is to stay away from Google. Much of the information there is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the more spectacular cases. This won't give you any answers and will only serve to scare you further. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and 1 of pre-cancer, all within a year of diagnosis. I had a lumpectomy for the first bout and a double mastectomy the second time. That was 17 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi piglet1012

I’ve just joined this forum for the same reason, I found a breast lump and went to see the GP on Monday this week, I’m 38 and been referred for urgent screening. I’m doing my best to stay away from Dr Google but did find the information about what to expect at the screening appointment on my local hospital website really useful. I have my appointment with the breast clinic on 9th Nov. Hope your appointment goes well.
