Has anyone had to go back after benign breast biopsy results?

My mum had a routine mammogram and 2 weeks later she got a letter saying she had to go back for further tests. That appointment was 2 weeks ago, and she had an X-ray, another mammogram and a biopsy. The nurse said that it was highly likely they were cysts.

The breast clinic rang her this morning and said her biopsy results came back as benign and that they were cysts, which is obviously a relief. But she has to go back next Tuesday for further investigations.

I suffer badly with anxiety, especially health anxiety, so this whole situation has been really anxiety-inducing for me. Even though the results were benign and the nurse said there’s nothing to worry about, I can’t help but think the worst and worry about why she needs further investigations.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been through something like this, as my anxiety is getting the better of me.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been feeling this way and it can be natural to think the worst sometimes, but it usually is unhelpful. You're not alone though, health anxiety is not uncommon and it can be managed with practice. There is guidance and tips for health anxiety on the NHS website, which might be helpful. It's also common to go through further tests so the doctor or nurse is satisfied things are ok, but they are there to help so if you or your mum need clarification on anything they can address that. For now, it's important to focus on the fact that your mum's lumps are benign, which is great news!

I hope this is useful and keep us updated,
