Ultrasound after irregular & heavy bleeding waiting to see Gynaecologist

Hi all

I am a pre-menoapusal 45 year old female who has been sufering from heavy and irregular bleeding over the last 6 months.  I have a strong family history of cancer: mum died of reast cancer agead 54 (diagnosed aged 46), maternal grandmother died of breast cancer aged 81 (diagnosed at 49), maternal aunt was diagnosed with ovarian cancer aged 44 and is still alive, my son was diagnosed with tesicular cancer last year (2025) aged 21.

I have seen a Gynaecologist via Bupa (covered by employer) and he ordered a pelvics and transvaginal ultrasound which took place today.  He said that he woudl likely call with the results an potentially start me on HRT as he didn't think there would be anything remarkable.

At the end of the scan I asked the radiologist if all was clear and he said 'there is a lot going on'.  He asked when I was seeing my gynaecologist again so I pressed him and he said that I have a number of what he believes are fibroids and my left fallopian tube is full of fluid and blocked and because of this he couldn't see my left ovary on the scan.  I forgot to ask about womb thickness as the GP who referred me had mentioned checks for womb cancer and tbh the radiologist didnt really want to say much just 'there's a lot going on' and he asked if I have had bloods tests or a recent CT or MRI scan, which I haven't.

I have emailed my gynaecologist now I am home advising him that my scan is complete and a brief of what the radiologist told me and I am now waiting on a call or appointment on any next steps, I assume once thereport is written and shared with him.

Obviously I am now worried about what has been found and also what is likely to come next.  To be honest I would just rather have a complete hysterectomy and get it all out given my age and family history but I'm not sure if I can just request that.

If anyone has any info on what may happen next and also any advice on what to ask or push for that woudl be great.

When my son was dianosed with testicular cancer last year, he had a number of ultrasunds and we were told it was an abscess.  The urologist even did an exploratory operation due to suspected testicular torsion causing swelling and again we were reassured it was an infection.  Fast forward a couple of months and when we returned for a third scan they detrmined it was cancer and by then he had LVI (lymphovascular invasion) requiring high dose BEP chemotherapy. It also came to ligh that during the exploratory operation they had sewn the tumour to his scrotal skin which meant he couldn't have a prosthetic fitted.  Given this I want to ensure I am belt and braces in what I ask for so any advice would be really helpful.

Thaks so much in advance :-)

  • Hello JENNYMC2104,

Thank you for coming here and sharing your story. You did the right thing flagging this irregular and heavy bleeding which you have been experiencing for the last 6 months. I am glad that they did a scan but it must have been a bit unsettling for you to hear the words "there is a lot going on" and you were right to press him to find out more about what he meant specifically by "there is a lot going on". It was a good idea to email the gynaecologist after you had your scan and to give them an update after what you were told by the radiologist and I am glad that you will get to talk to him soon and see him in person.

It's normal to be worried especially as there is still so much uncertainty. I completely understand you are worried given your family history, but I would suggest you wait a little and gather all the details before you discuss the possibility of having a hysterectomy for example. Once you know exactly what is going on, you will be in a better position to consider all your options and that by the time you talk to him on Thursday they will be able to tell you more and explain things thoroughly to you. I am not sure what may happen next but if you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses, you are welcome to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. I also hope that you will get the insights of other members of our community who have been in your position before.

It's so sad what happened to your son and that he was initially told it was an abscess only later to find out it was cancer. I hope that he is well now though and that the treatment was effective. You're totally right to want to ensure it is all 'belt and braces' from now on. Just a few days to wait now until you see the gynaecologist on Thursday and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all goes well and that you get some clarity very soon. You are right to try and remain calm even though it's not easy and it will be good to actually see him in person rather than on the phone. As you say, there is no point worrying about something you cannot control and while you are waiting, it might be worth reading our helpful tips on how to cope while waiting for news. It might be a good idea to write down any questions you might have ahead of your appointment as it's easy to forget sometimes what we meant to ask.

I am keeping everything crossed for you for Thursday! Keep us updated on how it goes if you get a chance.
