Convinced I have bowel cancer

Hi. I’m so worried that I may have bowel cancer. This started back March when I ordered a test which showed there was blood present in my stool, I ordered this test because my bowel movements had been different for three months and then this prompted me to contact gp. I carried out a FIT test which came back at 7. My bloods came back ‘normal’ however I did notice my ferritin was on the low side but because it was within range it was classed as normal. Gp then carried out a rectal exam and said he couldn’t feel anything so referred me for a sigmoidoscopy. Whilst waiting for this I had an episode where there was a lot of blood in my stool (I did have sickness and diarreah when this occurred) 111 advised me to go a and e which I did but they just sent me home. Anyway fast forward 7 months later I am stilL waiting for my referral, I have chased my gp he has sent me down another route to see if this is any quicker but this was also two months ago with nothing still. Anyway the past couple of weeks I have noticed I have been going toilet more frequently, like 3 times a day when usuallY it’s just the once. My stools are darker but not black/tar and they are mainly loose. I have also noticed thin stools when they are not loose. My bowels never seem empty after I have been and I can’t help thinking the worst. I have once again contacted my gp with my concerns and hoping something can be rushed along. I just wanted to know if anyone has experienced similar and had a positive outcome. It’s hard not to think the worst.

thank you

  • Hi Idieh,

I'm sorry to hear you've been waiting so long for your referral - it's good to hear that you've chased this up, and I hope it's not much longer to wait.

Do keep in touch with your doctor about any changes or further concerns you have, or for questions about the referral.

I know it's never easy dealing with uncertainty, so I hope you hear more soon.

In the meantime, hopefully you'll get some replies from others on the forum.

    Wishing you all the best,
