Urgent gynecology referral made after growths and thickened lining found on scan

Hi im 38 years old with a history of bad periods since the 1st one.  I had a scan in June 2026 as i have been having extremely heavy periods with flooding and clots with spotting between periods as well. I was told straight after the scan that the uterine lining was very thick for that time in my cycle and that there were numerous small growths and I would need more tests. I have a constant full body tremor so a hysteroscopy will need to be done under general anesthetic. My GP made an urgent referral to gynecology which was accepted on 1st July 2026. Since then the GP has sent expedite emails and I still haven't heard anything. The spotting between periods has gotten heavier and longer and even though im usually on time, this month i was 3 weeks late. And i have period like pain on and off all the time. I managed to get hold of the booking line and they couldn't tell me where I was on the wait list. Just that they could see the GP had expedited it and that it was down as urgent. I was told it could be up to 42 weeks and that the gynecology list is the longest list they have. I am so annoyed with this. Has anyone got any advice for how I can chase this up?  Sorry for the rant

  • Hey Bethan98,

I'm really sorry to hear what you've been going through and that you could be waiting up to 42 weeks for a referral, despite it being urgent and expedited by your GP. I can't begin to imagine how tough and incredibly frustrating this must be.

If you haven't done so already, it may be worth getting in touch with The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). They offer confidential information, support and advice on health-related matters and can tell you how to get more involved in your own healthcare. They will also be able to advise on how to make a complaint, so do take a look at the links I've provided to find out more.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their thoughts and advice with you soon but if you'd like to speak to one of our cancer nurses about this, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you at this very difficult time.

I really hope this helps Bethan and you're able to get an appointment sorted out soon.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
