Am I overthinking? Cervical Cancer.

Hi All,

Sorry for the lengthy message. Last year I started to experience symptoms of severe itching, bleeding during sex (not lots just spotting), changes in discharge varying from lumpy to very watery. The discharge varied in colour from dark cream to clear. I went to the drs for this once in summer last year where I was told I had thrush and prescribed medication which cleared it. It then came back (same symptoms) just over a month later but with some lower abdominal pain so I went back and was then diagnosed as thrush and BV which seemed to resolve again with medication. Again it came back where I was then diagnosed with thrush again. Each time they said my smear was not due but given the vaginal swabs came back as thrush /bv it settled my mind.  I’ve never experienced thrush and BV before now apart from once during my pregnancy so this has completely thrown me as to why it’s now recurrent.

Since then it has been on and off which rather than going to the drs has cleared with medication over the counter. I’ve since had two UTIs which included blood in my urine both cleared with antibiotics.

My smear was due in May which I booked but it then came back that it could not be tested and I needed to wait 3 months. I have now convinced myself that something serious is wrong. I’m still experiencing the same symptoms on and off with varying discharge/itching, bleeding during sex sometimes etc, lower back and abdominal pain which seems to be around ovulation but also my little keeps getting in our bed so this could also not be helping with the back ache/tiredness. I also suffer from very low b12/iron which is being managed so some of the symptoms could be crossing over.

i know that nobody can diagnose me other than the GP but could the recurrence of symptoms be caused by cervical cancer - can it cause recurrent Bv/thrush? I’ve convinced myself that this could be something bad and I’m terrified. I go to call the drs and then put it off out of fear but have never delayed or missed a smear. I’m hoping I could just be unlucky and now suffer from recurrent thrush/bv or could just be experiencing perimenopause but any advice or experience would be so greatly appreciated.

  • Welcome to the forum, Sweetpeas1234.

It sounds like this has been a long and frustrating year for you, with symptoms coming and going, several rounds of treatment, and now the added wait for your smear result on top of everything else. It is completely understandable that all of this uncertainty has left you feeling anxious and turning things over in your mind, particularly as thrush and BV have never been a recurrent issue for you before.

As you have rightly said, nobody on here would be able to tell you what is or isn't causing your symptoms, and that really is something only your GP can look into properly. It might help to know we have a page on the symptoms of cervical cancer, which you may find useful to have a read. Do also bear in mind that our team of nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, if talking things through with someone on the phone would help.

It's clear how much fear is holding you back from picking up the phone to your GP, but please try, if you can, to make that call, as they will be able to look into your symptoms properly and get you the answers you need.

I do hope that you get some clarity very soon.

    All the best,
