Cancer mistaken for fibroadenoma??

I had a scan yesterday and the doctor said he thinks it could be fibroadenoma but did 2 biopsies and was very quiet after. I’ve scared myself googling and I’m waiting for the results but everything I’ve googled and the ultrasounds I’ve seen of cancer look like my scan

  • Hi Jb99,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

There is no way to determine whether cancer is present simply from an ultrasound, The reason for a biopsy is to see if there is any cancer present or not. I have been in the situation where even my consultant thought that my tumour was cancerous, but the biopsy proved that it was benign. Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or Fibroadenoma. It is a fact that of all those referred to the breast clinic, only 20% will get a cancer diagnosis. Were you told when to expect the diagnosis?

I am not surprised that you've scared yourself further by Googling. We usually recommend that patients do not Google, while waiting for results. Much of the information is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the more spectacular cases. This is always an anxious wait, but I hope that your consultant is right and that this turns out to be a Fibroadenoma as suspected.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
