Suspected cervical cancer, 5 week wait for MRI

I'm really worried and upset. 3 months ago I started with very heavy bleeding and huge clots with abdominal pain. I went to the GP who sent me for an ultrasound. My ultrasound was 3 weeks ago and the Ultrasound results were that I have a 38mm mass in my cervical canal and that they suspected cancer. The next day my GP made a suspected cancer referral and I went for a colposcopy last week. The consultant couldn't see the mass due to its location but took some biopsies of other abnormal cells. They said they had to assume the worst and referred me for an MRI and told me to call the next day. When I called the next day I was told there is a 5 week wait for an MRI. I am so upset, I have been in pain everyday for so long and it feels like they aren't dealing with this as urgent as I feel they should. Why was I sent for colposcopy if that couldn't see this big mass in my cervix? Now for someone to look at the suspected cancer is possibly 7 weeks from my initial GP referral.

  • Hello QueenbeeC and welcome to Cancer Chat,

I'm sorry to hear that you're sad and about the pains you've been having.

I'm sure your GP is doing their best to investigate your symptoms thoroughly and, as you can imagine, health services are in high demand so waiting can be difficult and maybe longer than you expected. Do chase your hospital or clinic if you feel need to as there may be cancellations, but when you have are waiting for an appointment it's important to look after your wellbeing in the meantime. There is some more guidance around coping with waiting for news, which you can refer to at anytime. We also have some information about MRI scan, which might help you feel prepared.

I do hope this helps and that your scan comes soon,
