I had a colonoscopy a few months back.I was informed that I may experience some discomfort. On the basis of this I opted to have sedation. Whilst the procedure began smoothly, it quickly escalated into what I can only describe as one of the worst pains I have ever experienced. It literally paled into insignificance compared to childbirth and fracturing my wrist.I always considered myself to have a fairly high pain threshold. I was clearly wrong.Within a few minutes I was in agony and felt like something was trying to break out of my abdomen ( Alien). I was told before that if it became too painful then to ask and they would stop.I was in obvious distress and the health care assistant who was standing next to me assured me that it would get. easier and the pain was just the result of trying to “ turn a corner “. I persisted but on reflection I really wish I’d have given feedback following the experience..
In my opinion there needs to be a review and a more honest and realistic translation of what level of pain might be experienced. To just glibly say “ some discomfort “ is majorly understating the reality. I would be very interested to see if others may have had similar experiences and be grateful for their thoughts.
