Awaiting referral to breast centre and petrified

I found a lump in my right breast yesterday which I can only really feel when running my fingers along the top of my breast with my arm raised. It feels like half a grape and the rest seems to merge into the breast tissue. I had it checked by a nurse practitioner at my GP who has referred me to the breast centre which is in just under 2 weeks time.
I’ve been madly researching it and panicking because all I’ve read is that “fixed” lumps are usually cancerous because it isn’t a classic round lump and more of an attached lump.
I know it’s so important to get it investigated but I’m freaking out because I have two very young children and I’m their primary carer and I’m scared my world is about to come crashing down.

  • Hi Annabel128,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry that you find yourself in such a state about your referral to the breast clinic. The one big mistake you've made is in consulting "Dr Google". We usually advise people not to do this until they know what they're dealing with, as much of the information is poorly researched, out of date and aimed specifically at the more spectacular cases. This does nothing for your peace of mind, doesn't give you any answers and only serves to scare you further. Fortunately not all lumps are cancerous - many turn out to be benign cysts or fibroadenoma. It is a fact that, of all those referred to the breast clinic, only 20% will get a cancer diagnosis.

The best thing you can do at present, is to keep busy - it doesn't matter whether this is with work or pleasure - anything to take your mind off the wait. It is only natural that you worry about your young family - we all do. I was diagnosed16 years ago and had 2 bouts of breast cancer and 1 of pre-cancer, all within the first year. I had a lumpectomy first, followed by a double mastectomy for the second bout. In the interim, I have seen my children grow up and reach many of their milestones and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

You have done the right thing by getting this investigated and I sincerely hope that this will turn out to be something that you can deal with. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
