Two positive HPV results, then negative, then positive again

I had a HPV test last year which came back negative after 2 years of positive tests. I’ve just had one this month and it’s positive again! I haven’t had a new partner in this time and I’m very concerned the test last year was a false negative. This seems very likely as I’m positive again this year. If last year had been positive I understand I would have been sent for a colposcopy but because I’ve now had a negative in between positives they have just recommended another test in a year. This just doesn’t seem right to me as clearly my body hasn’t cleared the hpv from 3 years ago and I may have had it even longer as I was positive on my first test.

Has anyone experienced this? I’m trying to follow up with my doctor but they don’t seem to know much about it and have said they’ll have to research it and get back to me…

  • Hello AliceCoco

I'm sorry to hear that your most recent cervical screening result tested positive for HPV. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about things at the moment given your past history of results.

Hopefully your GP will be reaching out to the local gynaecology team for advice and to see if a referral would be appropraite. Do follow up with your GP if you don't hear back from them.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk with one of our nurses then you're welcome to call them. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice ,information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope you get osme answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,
