Breast screening worry

Hi

After my first screening mammogram I was called for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound due to a “mass” at the very back of my breast.   The mass didn’t show up on the ultrasound but another cluster of cysts were spotted, these didn’t show on the mammogram.   A biopsy was taken.   I was told I have busy breasts.    I had a second biopsy via a mammogram machine on the mass at the back.    Worried that two biopsies indicate a problem.   Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Thank you x

  • Hello Mitch12

I'm sorry to hear that after your first mammogram, you were called back for further testing and that you are now waiting for biopsy results. It's understandable that you have some questions and concerns.

Being recalled after a first mammogram is more common than many people realise. Callbacks happen more often on first mammograms because doctors have no prior images to compare your tissue to. In about 90% of cases, further testing reveals nothing serious. You've mentioned that the specialists have said that you have "busy breasts". Dense tissue can make the image look unusual, which is another reason for recall.

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for your biopsy results, and the specialists will then be in a position to give you some answers and reassurance.

In the meantime, if it would help to chat things through with one of our nurses, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Do keep in touch, Mitch12, and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
