Calprotectin high reading - I've been asked to do another stool test, is this normal? I think I should be referred

Hi,

I’ve been suffering from severe bloating for around a year now, I’ve always been constipated from a young age. But it’s recently got really bad, I have had all the time too. I’ve had a stool test done and it’s come back as 723 ug/g.

my dad and brother both have chrohns too, so not sure if it’s hereditary. Dr has asked me to do another stool in 2 weeks, but I think I should be referred on now. Does this seem normal?

what were others outcomes from such a high reading?
thanyou for reading. I’m so nervous of what will happen next

  • Heya. Maybe it’s time to request an urgent referral.

  • Hello Jhassan1994

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some ongoing concerns about your bowel health and that, following some initial investigations by the GP you had a raised calprotectin reading. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

It's not uncommon for doctors to ask for these kinds of tests to be repeated after a short time frame. This helps them to get a better picture of things and gives the specialists more information if they feel that further investigations are needed.

There could be many reasons for the symptoms you've been experiencing, and given that you have a family history of Crohn's disease, it's understandable that the GP may be wondering if this is what may be responsible for the problems you've been experiencing.

If it would help to chat with one of our nurses for some advice and support, you're most welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any reassurance they can.

I hope you have some answers before too long.

    Best wishes,
