Anxious for mum

Mum was ill in January, a ct scan showed a vast shadow on her lung, this was followed up with another ct 8 weeks later which showed it was highly unlikely to be infection as it had grown so a full body pet ct was ordered. Biopsy not possible due to location. Pet ct was done last Monday. The results were at the mdt meeting today so I’m assuming we will hear over the next few days

We lost dad after a very brief cancer diagnosis in 2023, at 68, same age mum is now. Mum has been so emotional and I’m worried sick about her. I have 3 siblings and although I’m not the eldest, I’m kind of in charge and in control of everything.

I am prepared for the worst, but how can I support mum through this?

Many thanks x

  • Hello DinkyD33,

I am so sorry for your dad - it's so sad that he passed away following a brief cancer diagnosis in 2023 and it's so unlucky that you're having to go through this anxious wait again now with your mum. I hope that the PET scan will shed some light on what is going on and that you get some clarity soon and a definite diagnosis.

It's completely understandable that your mum has been emotional; she has been through a lot since January and you are under a lot of pressure too yourself especially as you are having to be in charge and control of everything.

All you can do really at the moment is be there for your mum during this anxious time of having to wait for a diagnosis and time can feel really long. I am sure she knows you are there for her to listen and to support her at a time when she needs it the most. It's good to be prepared for the worst but try if you can not to anticipate what the diagnosis might be as you won't know for sure until you get the results of the PET scan. It's only a matter of days now until you get some clarity and I am keeping everything crossed for you. I thought I would also share with you our helpful tips on how to cope while waiting for important news. Feel free also to ring our nurse helpline on this free number 0808 800 4040 - it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you ever feel the need to talk things through with them.

Keep us updated if you get a moment on what you find out - we'll be thinking of you and hoping that it will all turn out to be nothing too concerning.

    Best wishes,
