Breast lump referral

Hi everyone. I struggle checking my own breasts for various reasons, I do check them but tends to be a quick once over in the shower every couple of weeks its never as in depth as what you get from a gp. I had an appointment for something else and asked my gp to check for me while I was there, she found a lump in my right breast. She described it as 'golf ball' sized, smooth, moveable, hard. On the 2 week pathway and have my appointment on the 30th, I am so so so so anxious. I got sent home from work today because I just wasnt functioning and my manager could see something was wrong, I ended up having a breakdown and spilling it all out to her.

Im just imagining them telling me I have cancer and 3 months to live or something, I know its unlikely im only 34, no family history, non smoker, dont drink, overweight but -4 stone to what i was this time last year (through excercise and healthyish diet) but I always catastrophise and think the worst.

3 young kids and Im really scared.

Any words of encouragement would be very welcome xx

  • Hi Strangerthings,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

You have done the right thing by getting your GP to check your breasts and I am glad to hear that she has referred you to the breast clinic for further investigation. Not all lumps are cancerous. Only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic get a cancer diagnosis. Many get diagnosed with benign cysts or fibroadenoma. The fact that your lump is moveable and smooth make me hope that you might get a better outcome, as most cancers have jagged edges and are fairly firmly fixed.

Despite the fact that breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, we all tend to catastrophise at this stage. We give rein to our overimaginative thoughts, which lead us to all sorts of dark places. I was exactly like you while I was waiting for a diagnosis, yet I'm fortunate enough to still be here 16 years on. In that time I have seen my 2 children leave school, go to university, graduate, find gainful employment, fall in love, marry and provide me with two beautiful granddaughters.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you at the clinic. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
