HPV abnormal smear & cervical ectropian

Hello, ive been have smears every year for 10/11years.

Last year was the first time I was HPV positive and abnormal result. Colposcopy showed area of abnormality but Dr stated would not biopsy as results wpuld be the same (not sure what she meant by that). And do repeat my smear in a years time.

Today was my smear. So recently ive been having pain during intercourse, some abnormal discharge and an offensive smell (can only describe as rotten meat) sorry! I assumed BV and bought over the counter medication.

Today the nurse says that I have cervical ectropian. I am neither pregnant and have not taken the contraceptive pill for about 10 years. This hasnt been seen on any of my previous smears so why now?

Im worried this is cancer and not ectropian cells.

Im already quite an anxious person so the wait for my results is going to be awful

  • Hello AMS1993

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so anxious following a recent cervical screening test. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things and what might possibly be going on for you.

It's good to hear that you've kept up to date with your screening over the years, as early detection is key to treating lots of different health conditions. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for your screening results. Once you have those back, if a referral to the colposcopy clinic is not made, then do get back in touch with your GP to discuss your concerns and the symptoms that you've mentioned.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our team of nurses, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
