Abnormal cells found on breast biopsy. Now waiting for breast surgeon consultation. Has anyone had this happen and it became cancer?

I found a small lump in my breast and had a mammogram and ultrasound. Originally the radiographer said it was a simple cyst, however carried out an FNA to drain the cyst and sent for testing.

“Cyst” came back as possible papillary lesion C3.

Biopsy was taken 8 weeks later and I have just received a letter to attend a breast surgeon consultation. I rang the breast nurse clinic today as I have had no biopsy results. She explained that it would be discussed in the meeting next week but that my biopsy was showing no cancerous cells, however showed abnormal cells.

Has anyone had this and turned into cancer? She was very vague on the phone.

Thank you x

  • Hello Lbd17

I'm sorry to hear that you recently attended the breast clinic after finding a lump. It's good to hear that nothing of immediate concern was picked up on your mammogram or biopsy but I can understand why you might be feeling anxious and need some further clarity on the cytology results.

There is some information on the Breast Cancer Now website about FNA (fine needle aspiration) results and what they might mean. Hopefully the team will discuss your results this week and then when you see the specialist, they will be able to answer all your questions and offer some reassurance.

In the meantime, if it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how you get on at your appointment.

    Best wishes,
