Referral for screening, lump painful and large.

Hi all, I was just hoping for some thoughts please if anyone might be having or had similar symptoms!

I went to the doctor with a very painful left breast, it was painful at even the lightest touch or movement, when the doctor examined me she located a large firm lump in the upper part of my breast above my nipple. I couldn't feel it as I was so tense from pain, but her colleague also felt it and confirmed it should be referred.

I'm 36, on the combined contraceptive pill (at this point 2 weeks into my pill packet, and never had pain like this before or lumps before) the pain was sharp and throbbing, but now its more like burning and sore only in touched or if I move.

She put me on a 2 week referral and on the same day I was offered an appointment in a weeks time (this coming Tuesday)

Although it's a short wait I'm still worrying. It feels the size of a 2p coin, it doesnt move, and is still tender to touch but nowhere near as painful, the redness is also gone. Could this be a good sign if the pain is easing?

Has anyone experienced a lump this size? With similar pain?

Thank you xx

  • Hello Nei89,

I see from your post that you are worried about some symptoms you have. The best thing to do while you wait is to focus on other more positive things in the meantime. When you’re worried that you may have cancer, it can be natural to think the worst sometimes, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. And the only person that can give you more information is your doctor. There is some guidance around how to cope with waiting for news on our website, which I hope will be helpful. You can also call our free helpline on 0808 800 4040, if you'd like to speak with one of our cancer nurses.

All the best for your appointment on Tuesday,
