After a positive fit test of 287 my husband has been referred for a colonoscopy. I'm worried sick. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

My husband has been referred for a colonoscopy after a positive fit test of 287 and I’m petrified. I’ve recently been diagnosed with spinal stenosis causing nerve damage and he’s stepped to be my carer and having had this devastating diagnosis and now being wheelchair bound I can’t believe he could be suffering from colon cancer.

he has a dull ache in his abdomen and says his hips and flanks also ache. His bowel habits have changed and are looser and more frequent.

has anyone else had a similar experience and does this definitely mean he has colon cancer? I’m worried sick

  • Hey, I'm sorry you are going through so much. I understand your worry. I've just had my FIT test results, and although lower than your husband (13), my calprotectin 164, and I also have a h pylori infection which I'm on antibiotics for.  I've now been referred via the 2WW pathway and have a telephone consultation on Friday.  I'm freaking out.  I also have a dull ache in my abdomen, and for the first time today the need to urgently go to the toilet.  I would avoid the internet as it raises anxiety.  The referral is standard protocol for any one with a FIT result over 10, and could mean many things including inflammation, polyps etc.  It is good he has a colonoscopy booked to understand what is going on.  It would be also great to hear from others who have experienced the same and gone through the journey.

  • It doesn't mean he definitely has colon cancer. It doesn't even necessarily mean it's likely. A FIT test just tests for blood in the stool. Lots of things can cause that - an ulcer, hemorrhoids (though that is a lot of blood for hemorrhoids), diverticulitis, a polyp, an infection, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's... I think something like one in ten of those with a positive FIT test turn out to have cancer. Hope it will be something far more minor in your husband's case.

  • Hi I know its easy to jump to conclusions after getting elevated tests back but as Margaret has said its much more likely to be another far less sinister reason than cancer ,I've been there twice and had 2 Colonoscopies that both turned out to be nothing to worry about even though I worried myself into the grave before hand ,probably from reading stuff online which I now know is old and out of date ,things have moved on a lot since they were printed and wasn't directed at me at all ,try to stay positive and take each day as it comes until you know more ,if you want to know more just ask and someone on here will try and answer your questions from their experience ..
