Cin 3 diagnosis from smear

Letter came today, high, severe, scarey words.

Have been seeing my GP with lower back pain and lower abdominal pain, gave me laxatives. Said he would push for an ultrasound, no ultrasound yet!!

Since then, had my smear, results Cin 3 and all the scary words.

Not sure what I am asking for really. Scared, feeling alone.

  • Wow, 61 views and not a single reply. Not very supportive.

  • Hi Laneyb and a warm welcome to our forum,

I am so sorry you haven't received a reply yet so I wanted to jump in and say hello. Sometimes it can take a couple of days to get a reply but I just wanted you to know you are not alone and we are here to listen and support you in the best possible way. I just wanted to reassure you that even though words like high and severe can sound scary and being told they have identified abnormal cells after your smear can be really stressful but as you will see by reading our in-depth information on abnormal cervical cells this can be successfully treated and these changes in the cells covering the cervix are not cervical cancer.

It sounds like the lower back and lower abdominal pains are a separate issue but you were right to flag this with your GP and it's good that they are being thorough and offering you to have an ultrasound. It might be worth double checking with your surgery that the referral has indeed been sent out for the ultrasound and you could ask how long it might take to be seen so you have a better idea as to when it might take place.

If you have any questions about CIN3 and the treatment you might have, we have a nurse helpline which is completely free and they will be happy to talk things through with you and answer any queries you might have. You can get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Sometimes just having a little chat can do wonders to give you peace of mind.

I hope that others who have had CIN3 and dealt with a similar diagnosis after a smear test will see your post and respond with their experience. Try not to be too scared as a result of these complicated words as this is something that can be effectively dealt with. I hope you get an appointment soon to get a chance to talk about your results and ask questions as receiving a letter with scary words often raises more questions than answers.

I am sure all this will get sorted very soon so that you can put all this behind you. Waiting for further tests, treatment or simply to get a clear interpretation of results can be nerve racking and I just wanted to share with you our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news

    Best wishes,
