Left wondering - 2 cysts found on ovary. Was told I would see a doctor but instead I've been given another ultrasound appointment in 4 months time

I had a transvaginal ultrasound a few days ago after having surprise light bleeding 3 weeks ago. I'm post menopausal, been on hrt 2 years.  GP was concerned about my cervix but lining and cervix were fine. However Ultrasound lady said she saw 2 'simple cysts' on my ovary and I would get an appointment to see the dr.

Instead, Ive been sent an appointment for another ultrasound in 4 months and an appointment with the gynaecologist a week after. They said to 'get a repeat blood test for 'tumour markers' a week before.'

Ive never had a blood test for tumour markers so this was a shock. Should I have had? I had a blood test but only because of suspicion I was anaemic. I thought a dr would explain the results of the scan but Instead I am waiting another 4 months with no idea what's going on.

  • Hi 50andhere,

I am not sure why you have been sent an appointment for another ultrasound in 4 months' time and an appointment to see the gynaecologist a week after when you were expecting to just see a doctor but perhaps you could get in touch with your GP and enquire about this so that you don't feel left in the dark and know exactly what to expect and why you have been told to have a repeat blood test for tumour markers. Do mention that you don't think you have had this blood test before - your surgery will be able to check in your medical records whether you have had it before and you are simply not aware of it or it had a different name so I think it's the kind of thing that is definitely worth checking.

It does sound like it might be helpful to talk things through with your doctor so that they can tell you more about the results of the scan you have had and explain why you are having this second ultrasound. You definitely shouldn't wait 4 months without knowing what is going on or what to expect and it might be just something really simple or nothing to worry about but having this conversation with your doctor will give you some reassurance and guidance while you are waiting for the next steps.

I hope you manage to speak to someone soon and that you get a bit more clarity on all this.

    Best wishes,
