First appointment with upper gi for suspected cancer and worried about my BMI. Will they still do tests?

I saw the dr last week who has referred me for a 2ww upper gi appt for suspected cancer. They tried to play it down as they know i have anxiety but the symptoms im having all point towards gastric or pancreatic cancer.

Im just wondering what I should expect at my first appointment please?

Also I have private medical insurance but with a BMI of 52 private hospitals wont do any procedures as its too risky (prior to potential cancer). Im really worried that the NHS will say the same?

Will they still do tests or just leave me to decline without diagnosis or treatment?

I overthink everything and now im just terrified.

Any support or experience will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  • Hey Michelleeeee,

I hope you didn't mind me stopping by but I noticed you haven't had a reply to your post just yet so I wanted to reassure you that your post has been seen and offer you a very warm welcome to the Cancer Chat forum as well.

I'm sorry to hear about the 2 week referral you've been given for suspected cancer. This must be a very worrying and stressful time, especially when you don't know if any tests will be carried out due to your BMI. Unfortunately I can't comment on this but our team of cancer nurses may be able to help, so if you'd like to ask them about this and have a chat about anything else that may be playing on your mind, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease about what's to come.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their experiences and advice with you soon but in the meantime, we're sending you all our support and wishing you all the best with your appointment.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
