Neck lump - it feels hard and moves up and down when I press on it. I have no difficulty swallowing. Does this sound urgent?

I have a lump on my neck. I am 16M, very healthy. It is quite firm and painless it moves up and down when I swallow and then goes back to where it was before. It sometimes feels like fluid when I move my finger slowly over the top of it. The lump feels hard when I press hard on it and hurts a little. There is a smaller one parallel to it and the other side (concerning side) bigger. I have an appointment to the doctors but 2 week wait but I was ill last week with a cold and think it could be lymph nodes. Does it sound urgent? I have no difficulty swallowing or stuff.

  • Hello Reuben01

I'm sorry to hear that you have some health concerns at the moment. You've done exactly the right thing in making an appointment to see your GP as they will be best placed to check you over and arrange any appropraite tests or treatment.

In the meantime, try not to worry too much and it will help if you don't press or feel the lumps too much as sometimes this can leave them feeling sore.

Hopefully you will get some reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for the reply, I won’t press it as much as I think it’s either a bone (hyoid bones) or a cyst. Although, thank you for taking the time to reply.
