Worried about rectal cancer - tested positive with home FIT test, now GP has asked me to do another. It's hard not to worry

Evening

im not really sure what to say or where to start.
I lost my mum to bowel cancer 9 years ago and my dad to oesophageal cancer last summer.
I had a colonoscopy 2 years ago after suffering with various issues. Some polyps were found but thankfully they were benign. Fast forward to now and for the last 6/7 months I’ve been having issues. Stomach cramps after going to the toilet, bleeding but it’s in the poop constantly gurgling stomach extreme fatigue and just generally feeling unwell. I did an at home fit test a month ago and it was positive I saw my gp on Friday and she examined me (I also suffer with lichen sclerosis so wanted a female dr) she could feel a nodule and asked me to do another fit test. Naturally I’m worried as like me she thinks it will be positive but at least it will get me back in the colorectal system and has noted it as high risk 2ww. It’s hard not to worry. I keep telling myself it’s haemorrhoids and everything will be fine but I’ve been using suppositories and tried cream and that hasn’t made a difference  I just want to know one way or another  bloods have come back fine (I was hoping my thyroid was out of whack) but at least that’s a positive there’s nothing ominous there

  • Welcome to the forum Lollyb42, although I'm sorry to hear about the results of the FIT test you did at home.

This must have been very concerning but you did the right thing by following up with your GP so further investigations can take place.

Waiting for the results of the FIT test you've done through your GP must be very tough but I hope this guide we have on how to cope with the wait will help to settle your nerves until you know more.

I hope it helps to know that we have a lot of members within our community who have been in a similar situation, so you are not alone Lollyb42, and hopefully it won't be long until some of them stop by to offer their support and advice.

Hopefully it won't take too long for your results to come through, but if it would help to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about any of this, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to support you whilst you wait.

Let us know how you get on when you can Lollyb42. We'll be thinking of you and have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
