VIN 3/Vulva cancer - waiting for biopsy results. How was the news delivered to you?

Hi

This is my first time posting.

So basically I became symptomatic in November 2025 with a persistent itch/burning and then January I discovered a wart like soft growth on my left labia. I plucked up the courage two weeks later to have it seen.  The GP commented that she didn't think it was VIN 3 and put me on a 2WW for gynae/oncology input.

I went to my appointment and the Consultant said "ohhh that needs a biopsy!" I asked if he thought VIN 3 and he paused and said yes, it also requires urgent surgical input. The biopsy was really uncomfortable and I am 7 days post, this is still really uncomfortable.  I am not awaiting the results and I can't help but think this will be bad news. I just wish the wait was over. Does anyone have a similar experience and how was the news delivered to you?

Thank you in advance x

  • Welcome to the forum Debzv88, atlhough I'm sorry about the anxious wait you now have for your biopsy results.

I know what the consultant told you is probably making this a lot harder but if you can, try not to think the worst until you know more. Much easier said than done, I know, but I hope some of the tips and advice we have in this guide on how to cope with waiting for news will make things slightly more bearable at this very challenging and uncertain time.

I hope some of our members will share how they received their news with you soon but if it would help to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very understanding and will do all they can to support you whilst you wait.

In the meantime, we're thinking of you Denzv88 and we'll have fingers crossed your results bring good news when they come through.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Debzv88 .  I would say my situation was similar to yourself . After feeling soreness and discomfort i chose for an initial private appointment with a Gynae Consultant . Very thorough appointment/examination with a letter for my GP to refer me for the urgent two week referral gynae/cancer  clinic .  The 2nd appointment was within the 2 week wait and a biopsy done there and then and then the waiting game really  began . I did phone to chase things up about the results . The results were given by phone after about 5 weeks and confirmed in writing . I was told it was Vain3 pre cancerous cells and i would need surgery to remove same .  The waiting goes on , i was hoping for the surgery to be completed before Christmas but that was not to be it was mid January this year .

I had a WLE to remove the lesion and am approaching my 5th week of recovery . I am now waiting for my follow up appointment and the histology results . The follow up appointment should be 8 weeks from the surgery but i am on a waiting list for the appointment  . Hopefully the wound will be well healed by then but i found it strange to be on a wait list again as the appointment should be 8 weeks away ? Thats probably me just being me , not very good with waiting .

i hope that you are feeling better and that I have not made things seem worse for you but on the whole my first appointment was the beginning of october last year and the surgery mid january this year so not that bad really . Still a bit of a way to go and hoping my next appointment will be mid march as initially suggested  .  Take care ….x

  • I appreciate this so much Steph, thank you so much for your support xx

  • Hi Jazzle

Bless your heart, the wait is horrendous.  I am a week and a half into my wait for results and hoping it wont be much longer. I am within the northeast, where are you based as I have heard this can impact wait times.

Yeh that definitely seems really unfair to make you wait again on another waiting list.

I just pray it's all VIN 3 as expected, although my gut is screaming otherwise.

Speedy recovery and I hope you're ok xx

    Hello again ,

I know my mind goes into overdrive at times and although being told precancerous cells but not cancer I’m thinking but how long has it been precancerous? How quickly can it change into cancer ? How do they know all the precancerous cells have been removed ?  Then although my doubts seem quite logical (in my mind) I have to say to myself get a grip I will only make myself feel worse and I just try to be upbeat and get on with things , easier said than done .

I am in the West Midlands  . It does not follow though that all treatments and appointments will be at the same hospital unsure if that would help with all the waiting . So far I’ve attended three hospitals , pretty local furthest away being about 10 miles .

It’s good that you found the courage to get checked though . As many others have mentioned on this site these symptoms can be in the most difficult places to see . My first appointment the consultant said now I want you to get a magnifying mirror with a light so you can check things and if any changes let us know .  Contortionist I am not but I do try my best .

Hope you get the biopsy results soon and that there is a plan for you  .  Will be thinking of you  , take care ….xx
