New here and terrified - suspected cancer referral for pancreatic cancer. Feeling hopeless. Has anyone else felt this way?

Hello all,

I haven't been able to sleep properly for days as just terrified about the looming prospect of being diagnosed with PC.  I was absolutely fine until beginning of last month and then had two weeks of feeling ill. Nausea, tiredness, no energy to do anything and losing weight without trying. I then developed cramps in my groin, and constipation.  Was so shocked to then see almost white stools after about three days.  After that most of my other symptoms lifted, and regained energy and appetite.  However then started to experience darker urine a couple of times a day, with stools turning from white to more of a yellow colour over the last couple of days. Not floating though.

The GP had requested a liver US for me last August as non urgent as routine blood tests showed some signs of potential liver issues - higher count of red blood cells.  US date finally came through for Wednesday.  This showed the liver is normal, no gallstones but a dilated Common Bile Duct and intrahepatic ducts.  The GP has now put in an urgent suspected cancer referral to my local hospital with specialist pancreatic, billary department. This should be in next 13 days

In the meantime I've been looking at the bleak statistics and how the UK lags behind even these compared to other countries such as Germany.

I feel my life is about to end, no hope etc..and it all feels so out of the blue. I'm 59 and took early retirement and just see this being very cut short.

Wondering if anyone else is feeling like this. And just dread being put on palliative care.  I see there are a few more treatment options available but outside the NHS.Apologies if this feels melodramatic but I feel as if I've been thrown into an abyss.

  • Hello Victoria76

I'm so sorry to hear about the situation that you find yourself in. It sounds like things are incredibly overwhelming at the moment and it's understandable that you're feeling so scared.

We know that for many people this period of waiting for tests, results and appointment can be very difficult and our minds often head to the worst-case scenario. This is often exacerbated by searching online for answers.

Hopefully you will have your appointment with the specialist soon and they will be able to give you some answers and reassurance about the next steps in trying to gain a clear, accurate diagnosis about the symtoms you've described and the ultrasound results.

In the meantime, I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

There are also some tips in our post about how to cope with waiting for news that you might find useful.

Keep in touch Victoria76 and let us know how you're doing. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,
