Hysterectomy needed due to having CGIN3 and basically no cervix. I feel like I’m grieving a part of my body and losing part of what makes me a woman

Hi,
looking if someone has been through anything similar and can offer some advice or reassurance.
I’m 36 and a mum to 2 children. My gynaecology history has never been great and I’ve had numerous treatments to remove abnormal cells, most recent being a cone biopsy in 2019 which left me with very little cervix. When I was in the early stages of my second pregnancy I had to have a cervical stitch in place due to my cervix being very short. Fast forward to earlier this year, I attend my smear and then was told they couldn’t get enough cells. Smear was repeated once more and then I was told I needed a colposcopy. A biopsy was taken and I was called last week to attend the hospital today to discuss next steps. Obviously I was freaking out but as I fainted during the biopsy I assumed the doctor wanted to speak with me face to face. It was a total shock to hear I need a hysterectomy as I have CGIN3 and due to having basically no cervix no other treatment is possible. To say I’m shocked is an understatement. The doctor also said he doesn’t think cells are cancerous but they need to remove my cervix to be sure.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar? Were you diagnosed with cancer? I feel like I’m grieving a part of my body and losing part of what makes me a woman :(

  • Hello Staceyp1989,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat and thank you for coming here and sharing your story. I am so sorry to hear you are going to need to have a hysterectomy as you have CGIN3 and that they have not been able to offer any other treatment. It's reassuring news though that the doctor doesn't think the cells are cancerous but I can understand why they would want to remove the cervix just to be sure.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have experienced something similar and who also had a hysterectomy due to having CGIN3 and no cervix and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. It is completely understandable that you are feeling this way having a hysterectomy at such a young age and I thought I would share with you the information we have on our website on the hysterectomy which I hope you will find useful and answer questions you might have. We also have a nurse helpline you can ring if you wanted to talk things through on this free number 0808 800 4040 - it is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I also wanted to mention that I have recently come across another lady on this forum who was also feeling rather anxious about the thought of needing a hysterectomy very soon. The circumstances were different as she has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer but you can read  's thread on needing to have a hysterectomy and feel free to respond if you would like to do so. You will no doubt understand one another and how the thought of having this procedure is making you feel.

I hope that the surgery will go well and that you make a quick recovery.

    Best wishes,
