Black/brown toenail with black line

Hi,

my partner recently went to the doctors to get some help with sciatica, whilst he was there he mentioned about his big toenail. It’s had a black line on it for a good while now and is black in colour, it’s just on the toenail not on the skin. Now he’s a big football player and wore steel toe cap boots for near 10 years in his previous job so he put the nail down to trauma from playing football and possibly some knocks and bangs in work.
when the doctor seen his toe her reaction was “I don’t like the looks of it” which wasn’t very reassuring, and she never said anything else other than she was referring him to a dermatologist.
now having looked online (idiotic thing to do) it’s coming up with subungal melanoma, which is obviously very worrying for us.
he’s had no other signs and symptoms, no pain to the toe or anything. This is on his left foot. The only things he’s had is the sciatica pain but that’s all right sided, I don’t think that’s related but if you type these things into Google all kinds come up!

to top all of this off, at the moment we are going through chemotherapy with our son who’s recently been diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma. All is going well for our son but to have this with my partner also come up is causing more distress for us all.

my question is, has anyone ever had this type of “thing” and what the outcome was, what type of treatment did you have. Basically any information you can give would be greatly appreciated on the whole toenail situation. It’s making my partner and myself sick to our stomach as everything online points to survival rates and they seem low which is very disheartening.

  • Hi Beks348,

First of all, stop looking online as the melanoma statistics & information are out of date - new treatments have been used for a while & are changing those stats significantly.

Is the black line running from the nail bed to the edge of the nail (vertically) or is it horizontal (one side of the nail to the other side)? Subungual melanoma usually starts in the nail bed & grows vertically. His GP is right to refer your partner to a dermatologist because they are the experts. If they think it needs investigation they will biopsy the skin under the nail. If the result shows it's melanoma the next step will be decided - sometimes it requires part of the toe to be removed to check that melanoma cells haven't spread and then it will be decided whether further treatment etc is necessary.

It's a scary time for you, especially with your son's ill health, but it's good that your husband is going to be checked out & hopefully the nail is fine or, if not, it can be treated successfully. If you need to look online, please restrict it to websites like this CRUK website, Melanoma Focus and the British Association of Dermatologists whose information is most relevant & up to date.

Good luck with his referral & please let us know how he gets on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hi Angie,

I did the exact same thing when my son was waiting for his results from his tests. I couldn’t help but sit and look online at all kinds of horror stories. But I am trying my best to stop. This is why I’m here and asking for help and reassurance from the right places.

the line on his toe is vertical, is kind of in the mind but slightly off centre and then the rest of the nail seems to be going grey/black. He’s had no other issues, the nails isn’t broken, brittle or cracked. It’s just the colour.

When he’s had his referral I’ll definitely update.

    thanks, beks.
