Found a Lump, Changed in Size

I’m a 23 year old woman and found a lump in my right breast near my nipple around a month ago. I’ve been in denial since finding this lump being scared to mention it to anyone around me but have noticed it has grown in size so I am now a little worried. I’ve asked about family history (my grandmother has had breast cancer) and since googled symptoms, I don’t have any symptoms like inverted nipple, discharge or change in skin texture/colour but I’m going to phone my GP tomorrow as I can’t ignore this now. Would anyone have any advice on how to tell your mother about finding a lump?

Thanks :)

  • HI ppl123,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

You are doing the right thing by getting this investigated. Unfortunately, it is not impossible, but unlikely that someone as young as you is likely to have cancer. Not all lumps are cancerous. Of all the people who attend the breast clinic, only 20% get a cancer diagnosis. Other people have benign cysts, fibroadenoma, etc, so here's hoping that this might be your problem. Most people don't tell people until they have a diagnosis, although your mum may well have already sensed that something is amiss with you. It is always easier to break the news once you know what the problem is. You will find that the more positive you can be about treatment and the outcome, the better others will accept your diagnosis.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
