Breast lump found in left breast. Been referred to breast clinic but due to backlog I could be waiting 3 - 4 weeks. I'm sick with worry

Two days ago I noticed a lump on my left breast, I’ve been to see the nurse practitioner today who said it’s a  hard rigid lump to outer aspect of left breast- approx 1cm diameter, and felt it was concerning. She’s referred me to breast clinic however there’s a back log and looking at around 3/4weeks. I’m sick with worry, I had a full duct removal of the right breast in 2022 due to concerning lumps. Any advice at all please? I also stopped breastfeeding 4 weeks ago however this lump feels completely different to any lump I have felt before and no inflammation or general swelling which i would normally get with a blocked duct etc.

  • Hi EmilyDgxo,

You did the right thing flagging this lump on your left breast as soon as you noticed it and it's great that they are being thorough and have referred you to the breast clinic. How unfortunate though that they have been dealing with a backlog at the breast clinic and you are having to wait 3 to 4 weeks. It's completely normal to be worried especially given that you had full duct removal of the right breast in 2022 due to concerning lumps.

It's hard to tell really what it might be but it's definitely worth mentioning to the specialists at the breast clinic that you stopped breastfeeding 4 weeks ago as this might have had an impact so it's something they will need to be aware of. I hope that you won't have to wait too long to be seen at the breast clinic and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern. Try if you can not to anticipate the worst as there are so many other things it could be other than cancer. The hardest thing really is the long wait for tests and results and while you are waiting, it might be worth reading these helpful tips on how to cope while waiting for news
