Tonsil cancer?

Hi all.

For the past few months I’ve noticed what looks like a growth on my left tonsil, and it seems to have increased in size slowly. I haven’t had any lumps in my neck. I saw an ENT specialist, who examined me and did a camera-through-the-nose assessment. He didn’t seem concerned at the time but arranged an MRI to be thorough.

The MRI showed that my left tonsil is asymmetrical. The consultant phoned to explain the results and said the asymmetry could be due to inflammation or previous infections, but recommended removing both tonsils. He also said that none of the lymph nodes in my neck looked concerning.

I’m feeling really anxious about it, especially as I have small children. I haven’t had any major throat symptoms apart from the occasional sore throat. I’m wondering whether an MRI can fully rule out malignancy.

  • Hello Rachey42,

You did the right thing seeing the ENT specialist when you noticed that growth on your left tonsil and it sounds like they carried out a thorough examination including an MRI scan. On our website you will find out more information on tonsil cancer including a section on what tests are usually carried out to diagnose tonsil cancer. I think it is reassuring that the consultant rang to explain the results and that he thinks none of the lymph nodes in your neck look concerning. I am not sure myself whether an MRI can fully rule out malignancy but this is something you could find out maybe by getting in touch with your consultant and asking the question. I am sure he will be happy to tell you more and answer any questions as well address any concerns you might have.

It is normal to be anxious but I hope that you can get some clarity on this soon. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and I am sure they will be happy to guide you further and answer questions you might have on tonsil cancer and the diagnosis process.

I also hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have had similar symptoms before and that they will come and say hello and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
