Urgent skin cancer referral - what will happen at my dermatology appointment?

I had special photos taken new years eve and now got a dermatology appointment for Wednesday

Im really so worried what happens?

Ive just had a baby I'm terrified

  • Hi Shellavo,

They will remove anything suspicious with a biopsy. I just had a Dermatologist appointment with another biopsy yesterday and they froze a pre-cancer spot on my nose that I previously had skin cancer. Good Luck!

  • Is it done that day? Sorry I just so worried

  • If it's a worrisome mole they rarely do it on the day because they can't freeze it off like they can with suspected basal cell carcinoma - they need to surgically remove the whole mole.

It's not uncommon for new moles to grow or existing ones to change during pregnancy. Most are benign but they sometimes like to remove them to be sure. A dermatologist will have looked at the photos of your mole/lesion & decided they want to check it in person. They will examine it with a dermascope (handheld microscope) which shows them if the cell structure has changed. If they aren't sure it's completely benign, they will arrange for it to be removed at a future appointment. This is usually a couple of weeks later as a day patient & it will be removed under local anaesthetic & stitched up. Results are then taking an average of 6 weeks.

75% of patients moles are found to be benign or dysplastic (also known as atypical or precancerous) and there is no further problem once they are removed. The remaining 25% are melanoma but the majority of them have been caught early so are successfully treated with further surgery.

Try not to fixate on a worst case scenario because the odds of it happening are remote. Take someone with you to the appointment so that you don't miss anything that the consultant says (sometimes brain fog sets in & you forget the conversation afterwards).

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
