Huge breast lump

  1. I have a breast lump the size of a tennis ball & it's very hard & tender. I hoped it was a cyst & it would be drained but instead I've had a mammogram, ultrasound & biopsy. In fact the mammogram  failed twice during the scanning. I'm now in full blown panic mode as I don't know what it could be & fear the worse. Is this familiar to anyone?
  • Hi Prunella and a big welcome to our friendly forum,

You did the right thing in getting this breast lump looked at and I can imagine this is a bit of a stressful time for you as you are having to go through each step, the mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy and it can take a while to get all the results and a full diagnosis. How unfortunate too that the mammogram failed twice during the scanning and I hope that it was third time lucky and that all you have to do now - and it's often the hardest thing - is wait for the results.

It's normal to be in full blown panic mode in your place and I just wanted you to know you are not alone and many members of our forum have been through this before and I hope that they will be along shortly with comforting and supportive words. Try if you can not to fear the worst as there are so many things it could be other than cancer and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be fine.

The long wait for results can be such an anxious time and I wanted to share with you our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for news which will give you some good coping strategies during this time of uncertainty.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you, I have a face to face on Jan 30th, so almost 2wks still to wait. I guess I'm like a lot of people. I just need to know.

  • Hi, Can i ask what the outcome to this was? just im in a similar boat just now and looking for real stories good or bad. Thanks x

  • Hi, of course.

I received my results on January 30th which was that I had very early breast cancer & the lump was a lot of tumours & milk duct issues. The whole breast care team have been fabulous & after more tests etc i had a mastectomy of the affected breast & removal of 2 lymph nodes (which didn't show any cancer )on March 5th. For me it was the best option as a breast reconstruction could be done at a later date should I want it.

I still need to have my post op results though which hopefully now will show no cancer left but I may need radiotherapy to prevent it coming back.

Wishing you good luck for a good outcome x

  • Thanks for replying. Hope your okay x

  • I'm absolutely fine, thankyou. I've honestly had no pain at all. x
