Worried about neck lump in daughter

Not sure what I hope to get from this post really…..

we are in the testing phase but feel like I’m spiralling so looking for some good news stories and reassurance I guess?!

my daughter is 13 and just before Christmas found an odd lump just to the right of her throat bone. Feels odd in shape to me…. She has previously had lymph nodes that come up and down and her dad has the same so we have been pretty calm about it all

I saw the GP who agreed there was something there and did bloods - thyroid check was normal

referred for an ultrasound which came back as ‘differential diagnosis’ and confirmed they can see something but it’s inconclusive. The GP has put her on the urgent 2 week pathways for San MRI which I am both grateful for (as know it is better to know) but has left me absolutely terrified that bad news may be round the corner

really trying to play it all down to my daughter as she panics anyway but I am spiralling and quickly falling down an internet rabbit hole!

can anyone offer words or wisdom? Reassurance? I’m scared for her and am not good in uncertain situations at the best of times!!

  • Hello worriedmama111

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has had some health concerns recently. It's perfectly understandable that you've been feeling anxious about this lump and what it might be.

It's good to hear that the blood tests and ultrasound she's had done haven't given any immediate cause for concern and it's sensible that the GP is following things up with an MRI given that the ultrasound wasn't able to give complete reassurance.

We know that for many people, this period of waiting for further tests and results can be difficult and lots of folks turn to the internet searching for information. Unfortunatley what happens more often than not is that they don't find the answers they need and are left feeling even more worried. Please worriedmama111, try to stay away from the internet rabbit hole. The only people who will be able to give you the reassurance you're seeking about this lump will be the health professionals and it sounds like your GP is doing all the right things to try and get to the bottom of this, as quickly as possible.

If it would help you to talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you will all have some answers soon. Do keep in touch and let us know how she gets on.

    Best wishes,
