High plasma cells detected

I am on a 2 week pathway for haematology appointment following a blood test showing high plasma cell count which could signify myeloma. I am very anxious but my biggest fear is that I might need a bone marrow biopsy. Has anyone had one and can I request sedation?

  • Hello Dialcy,

It can be anxious waiting for an appointment. When you’re worried that you may have cancer, it's natural to think the worst sometimes, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. And your doctor is always the best person to address any questions or concerns.

I hope your appointment goes well and if you'd like more information on our website, you can find guidance around bone marrow biopsies on there, which might be useful. If you'd like to speak to our team of cancer nurses about this or anything else, you can contact our free and confidential helpline 0808 800 4040. Lines are open 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.
