Fibroadenoma?

So I went to the doctors after finding a pea sized lump on my right breast, doctor could feel it too and could feel a couple in my left breast too. She said she suspects fibroadenoma but would send a referral to get it checked. My letter has arrived and she's booked me in to the Fast Track Breast Surgery clinic and my appointment is 31st December. Seeing the words on paper have sent me into a spin.

I have no clue what to expect, the letter says it could take up to 3 hours.

I am 33, a mum of 3 boys (5, 8, and 9) and absolutely dreading this appointment. Any advice would be gratefully received.

  • Hi Dindin92,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

You have done the right thing by getting investigated. I am sorry to hear that you are waiting for your appointment at the breast clinic. This is always a worrying time, as there are so many unknowns at present. Our imaginations also tend to go into overdrive, which doesn't help. The fast track referral to the clinic is the normal way to be referred here and is nothing to worry about. Only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis. Many people get diagnosed with benign cysts or Fibroadenoma, so here's hoping that your GP is right!

You will find the staff at these clinics are usually very helpful and reassuring. You are advised to leave 3-4 hours for your appointment because you are likely to be sent for different tests - usually an ultrasound, a mammogram and possibly a biopsy. This involves moving from one clinic to another and often back to see your consultant again before you leave. Time taken will depend upon how busy the clinics are, although some can be much quicker than the recommended time scale. If you need a biopsy, you may have to wait a further 1-3 weeks to get the results of this. If your consultant suspects cancer to be present, they will usually tell you straight away, although you may still have to wait for the biopsy results to confirm this.

People under 40 tend to have denser breasts than older people, so they don't always have a mammogram. This is because dense breasts don't always show up well on mammogram and the more usual test will be an ultrasound. I do hope that all goes well for you and that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
