Doctor wants to speak to me in person

I’m currently in the process of getting a diagnosis. On the 9th of December, I had an EBUS biopsy.

The results usually take a couple of weeks to come back.

I then received an email scheduling a PET-CT scan for the 30th of December (I had already had a CT scan).

This felt alarming, so I immediately tried to speak to the doctor to understand why it was being arranged and whether it was urgent, especially since he had previously told me I could go on holiday.

I wasn’t able to speak to the doctor directly — only the receptionist — and because of that, I had already left to see my family in Italy.

I’ll be back on the 7th, so the receptionist said they would let the doctor know and ask if the consultation could be done by phone.

Now I’m here waiting, feeling extremely anxious and guilty for having left, and it’s eating me alive.

  • Hi Lorena81,

I can imagine this is a really anxious time for you as you are waiting for answers and a diagnosis but try not to feel guilty for having gone to Italy to see your family and I hope that despite everything you are having a nice time there. Getting this email informing you that you have a PET-CT scan on the 30th December was unexpected and has therefore made you feel understandably worried. Try not to worry too much if you can and don't let this spoil your time away - have you managed to reschedule your scan for when you get back home?

I am sure they will be able to rearrange things for after the 7th and I hope that you can have a consultation by phone with the doctor before. Don't feel guilty for having left - you didn't do anything wrong and you were told before that you could go on holiday so try to make the most of every day in Italy if you can.

Waiting is the hardest thing though and I hope that you will get some answers soon and that you can talk to the doctor and understand more why they scheduled this scan. Try and enjoy your time away as much as you can and keep well away from the temptation to look things up on Google as this will only make you feel more anxious. Wishing you a lovely Christmas despite all this stress and I hope that you get some clarity soon and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.
