Is this normal? Arm pain for over a year. Also have been referred to the breast clinic

A year ago my arm went completely numb, since then I’ve been having nerve type pain going down my right arm on and off. The pain also goes into my armpit. Last Friday I noticed 2 lumps in my right breast and have been referred to breast clinic. I’m now panicking thinking the lumps have been there for a year but I do check my breasts and have never felt them before but still can’t help by worry. My arm goes through different stages of feeling bruised, numbness and tingling (tingling around my elbow) has anyone had anything similar and all been ok?

  • Hello Sillycat99,

You did the right thing in flagging these two lumps you noticed in your right breast and it's good that they are being thorough and have referred you to the breast clinic. Have you also mentioned to your doctor these strange feelings in your arm, feeling that it is bruised, the numbness and the tingling around your elbow? I think it's important if you haven't done so already to mention this to your doctor and to mention that your arm did go completely numb a year ago.

I hope that you won't have to wait too long to be seen at the breast clinic. It is normal to be worried but bear in mind that most referrals to the breast clinic end up not being cancer related but it's really important to be checked properly and thoroughly. There is information on our website on your referral to the breast clinic and the information Breast Cancer Now have on what happens at a breast clinic appointment will guide you through every step of what to expect from your appointment.

Our nurses helpline is also open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you would like to talk things through with them - you can call them on this free number 0808 800 4040.

Other members of our community have experienced similar symptoms before and have also been referred to the breast clinic in the past and I hope that they'll be along shortly to share their experiences with you.

Best of luck for your appointment - I hope you will be seen soon and that you will get reassuring news.

    Best wishes,
