How do I get rid of the anxiety?

So back in 2023 I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. I had chemo then onto a stem cell transplant this past February. The consultant said I’m high risk for breast cancer even though you don’t get regular mammograms and skin cancer. I have very sore underarms and spots due to scented products but I keep finding little lumps. How do I check the lumps myself because if I see a dr every time I’ll be there everyday! Did anyone have another cancer and go on to be diagnosed with another?

  • Hello Emma191,

It's completely understandable that you are feeling so anxious after what you have been through after your acute myeloid leukaemia diagnosis. You are very much affected by what happened and being told by the consultant that you are high risk for breast cancer is bound to make you anxious especially if you are not getting regular mammograms. It's easy then to see any little twinge or little lump as something potentially cancerous when it's likely to be the anxiety speaking, the fear of having to go through all this and through treatment again. But it's important not to ignore any lump and it's always a good idea to discuss whatever you are concerned about, even if it seems trivial, with a medical expert.

Breast Cancer Now have a useful section 'Touch, Look, Check'  which highlights what to look out for and how to look for changes. You will find out more about how to check your breasts and feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call if you want further guidance. You can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

While being breast aware and making sure you flag any changes you notice to your doctor, try also not to be too overwhelmed by this anxiety and if the anxiety becomes all-consuming, talk to your doctor about it and mention your fear of developing breast cancer and that the fear stems from what you were told by the consultant.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been in a similar place and who had one cancer and were like you worried about being diagnosed with another or who had another cancer diagnosis.

    Best wishes,
