Take the sedation - colonoscopy

Have the sedation!

Had my colonoscopy today. I wasn't going to take sedation as I was getting a train in the PM.

Thankfully the Consultant persuaded me otherwise.

He compared the injection cocktail to having a G&T which to be honest I'd agree with now.

He also cautioned ,, "You do want the procedure to complete fully don't you!" Which I did. Thanks doctor!

It was a g&t whose effects wore off in about 30 mins which was great because by the time I was back on the ward I was pretty much completely straight. Barely felt anything even when polyp removed etc.

Take the sedation :) honestly. Didn't spoil my experience of watching the video of my bowel either which was a fascinating distraction to what was going on at the other end of the bed.

I wanted to get the procedure done , the full length of my bowel and without drama, and I found it really easy with the light sedation injection.

Have heard that the gas is nowhere near as effective.

  • hello Jaggery,

having undergone several of these over the years l can agree sedation is definitely the way to go Since as l pointed out to the medics that l have a tendency to thump anyone inflicting pain upon my person, their response has been to give me a go fully to sleep sedation jabm, so l have missed the picture show to date.

l am possibly being scheduled for another in the near future,so hopefully with age mellowing me somewhat, l might get the lighter dose and get to watch the show and see if reality coincides with my imagined scenario,

and yes to conflate gas as being as good as morphine when your bowel has blocked and gone on strike is too much of a stretch, so glad to hear it wentwell for you,

    David

  • my cocktail was fentanyl and two other things.

    worked brilliantly.

I just wanted to make the post to put people's worried to bed. It's defo the way forward.

Two days before the NHS colonoscopy I was examined privately but only up to 15cm and that short exam without sedation was much more uncomfortable
