MEANING OF FIT RESULT

My mum is 83 and recently had a stool sample tested.  The doctor never explained to her what the result was or the result on her bloods. She is panicking as she doesn't know what it means,  My dad just been into the doctors rooms and her doctor isn't there but on my mum's report, the receptionist there says her FIT result was +3?  Never heard of this result.   Mine was 56 but have no clue what a + 3 means.  Any ideas? She is being referred for a colonoscopy.

  • Hello Shaz1975

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has recently had some health issues and that, following a FIT test, she's now been referred for a colonoscopy without a clear explanation from her GP about the reasons why. It's understandable that you might both be feeling concerned and frustrated.

A FIT test checks for blood in your poo. There can be many reasons that blood might be present in someone's poo and having further tests to identify the cause is not uncommon.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses while your Mum waits for her appointment, you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any further information, support and advice they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Alternatively, your Mum could call her GP surgery and ask for clarification about the results and the referral.

I hope that you and your Mum can get some reassurance from the specialists soon.

    Best wishes,
