Small mole has appeared on the surgical scar where I had my melanoma removed. Should I just monitor it or get my GP to have a look?

Last year I was diagnosed with melanoma stage 1. Finished follow up appointments last June. However recently I have noticed a small brownish spot on the surgical scar where I had the melanoma removed. Should I just monitor it and or book an appointment to see my GP to take a look at it?

  • Hi Walker7,

Anything that appears on or close to the scar should be checked out asap. As you were only discharged a few months ago, ring the nurse or secretary at your dermatology department & explain the situation. You may be lucky & they'll ask you back to check it out. If they say you need to be referred again, go to your GP and ask to be referred back, telling them that you've spoken to dermatology & that's what they advise. Hopefully it won't be a recurrence (I had the same on my scar & thankfully it was just a benign spot).

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patent since 2009)

  • Hi Angie, thank you for your message. I contacted the cancer nurse who was originally assigned to me when I was first diagnosed. She responded saying that I needed to go to my GP and if they are concerned to send a photo of the mole to the dermatology department and they will access as to whether I would need to be referred back to them, for further examination of the mole. My wife confirmed again that there is a small brown mole/spot on the scar.
