Post menopause bleed

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and find myself here after a very worrying week. I am 54 and approximately three years post menopause. I went through a very trouble-free menopause after having very frequent and heavy periods throughout my period menopause. Since the menopause I have had absolutely no Issues whatsoever. Prior to my period I would always get acid reflux symptoms, sore breasts, needing to use the toilet for number two a lot more frequently and general anxiety and emotional ups and downs. Approximately two weeks ago I experienced all of these things which came as a ball out of the blue only to wake up Wednesday morning to a period.
it started off very lightly and then went to a full blown period quite heavy just like it did prior to the menopause. Once the bleeding started all of my pre-menstrual symptoms stopped apart from the usual dragging feeling and cramp like stomach aches. I have been referred on a two week wait to Gynae but I’m literally beside myself with worry. Has anybody else experienced this bowl out of the blue without it being anything serious. Many people including health professionals where I work have said because of all the accompanying symptoms it does really sound like a period but every time I google this every article suggest this is not possible!

  • I am very similar, 55 post menopause, no periods for a long time, then on Saturday had a bleed when wiping, thought nothing of it, but still there later, needed a pad on Sunday. Made a drs appointment and was seen Monday, her exam was inconclusive, had a referral for internal/external ultrasound at local community hospital today, sonographer said there was some thickening of the uterus but I would have to wait for someone to contact me with the results for what happens next!! Trying not to worry too much!

  • It’s so hard not too because you are led to believe that any bleeding is abnormal, however there are so many women who have this issue. I work in the health industry and it appears to be a very common issue with the vast majority cases to be nothing sinister. It doesn’t however stop your mind wandering and thinking the worst. I have had what appears to be a normal period now for 7 days with every one of the usual period symptoms! I have my appointment for scan etc on Thursday. I am guessing the next step for you will be a biopsy perhaps? I think that’s the general pathway if the womb lining is thickened ?

  • Following lots of reading, I ‘m assuming a biopsy or a hysteroscopy will follow! Fingers crossed I am one of the majority and not the minority! Good luck for you scan too!

  • So had a follow up call, hysteroscopy and biopsy booked for Saturday!!

  • Hysteroscopy/biopsy today, consultant said she didn’t see anything that caused her to worry but still need to wait for biopsy result. Feeling more positive now!! Hope yours is ok too!

  • That does sound positive. I had my appointment on Thursday.

Firstly I have a couple of things going on down there. I have two fibroids both approximately measuring 4cm each however they don’t think they have caused the bleeding.
My left ovary has either a very small cyst or a follicle cobtaining an egg which is full of hormones and that has caused the period and all the other symptoms. There is a chance it could happen again however may not. My uterus endometrial lining is measuring 4.6mm and the cut off is 4mm so they had to do a biopsy today. She said the results of that can take 2-4 weeks however she will be very surprised if it shows anything untoward. I may possibly have to have an MRI of the fibroids just so they can have measurements of these on file to see if they change in the future.
Basically, I did actually ovulate and had a period!!
