Incidental large cyst on ovary - long wait to be seen

Hi, I guess I’m looking for some reassurance. I’ve not had the best of experiences recently and it has knocked my faith in the system. So a little background of me, in May this year I had to have emergency spinal surgery having developed cauda equina syndrome and was facing potentially becoming paralysed. There were issues re my diagnosis and a delay. My operation was a success, and I am not paralysed. Although have been left with nerve damage and pain.

I recently had an mri of my lumbar spine due to new pain and concerns about a potential re-herniation. The mri came back all good for my spine. However a bomb was then dropped when they confirmed there was an incidental finding. The only information I have is I have a large cyst on my left ovary. No more information.

I booked an appointment with my gp, who stated he would complete an urgent referral. Through the nhs app I then noticed that there were 2 forms for the referral and 1 of them was marked routine. I then checked the referral date and it was for the beginning of January. I freaked out and contacted my gp surgery and explained, they then did something and the date was changed to the beginning of December. I felt much better.

I was then advised to arrange  ca125 blood test by my work occupational health dept. So I booked in with the gp again and he gave me the relevant form, I’m booked to have the test tomorrow.

I then checked the app again hoping it would have some update that would say this is all a big mistake, no such luck and actually found the referral date has been pushed back to Jan again. I then had a complete meltdown and freaked out that this may well be an admin error and I don’t want to wait nearly 2 months to be seen, especially if it is worse case scenario.

The gp surgery has tried to reassure me that should my blood test results come back high then the referral date may be brought forward. I guess what I want to know is should I request another review into my referral? Or am I overreacting?

I’m exhausted and can’t stop worrying.

  • Hi j_b485 and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry about everything you have been through - it sounds like it's been very tough - and for the added stress and worry you now with the incidental finding of this cyst on your ovary.

Having to wait another 2 months to be seen must be very frustrating. It sounds like your GP surgery are very understanding so if it would put your mind at ease you could ask them to review the referral again. If you have more than one doctor working at your GP surgery, you could even try getting a second opinion (if you haven't done so already).

Our members know just how challenging this time can be, so you are not alone, and hopefully it won't be long until you receive some support and advice.

I hope this guide we have on how to cope with waiting for news and these tips the NHS have for managing anxiety will help to calm your mind but if it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to help.
