Info on taking Plenvu and colonoscopy please

Hi everyone, I’m having a colonoscopy on Sunday under the 2ww, fit test was 20 and calprotectin was 126. From what I can gather I think my bloods was ok. I’m wondering if anyone can give me any hints on taking the plenvu, I’ve read it’s awful, I have a mug with a straw to take it. How long after the last dose does your bowel clear out, we have an hour and quarter  car journey to the hospital and don’t want to be cut short. I’m not sure if I’ll have sedation but thinking I may, what’s it like with just gas and air please, do they still tell you the results on the day if you’ve been sedated also any tips on making the colonoscopy any better.

I had bladder cancer 14 years ago so I have had cystoscopes but think this will be worse. Thank you all for any help you can give me, oh by the way I’m a young 79 xxx Thanks Sue x

  • Hello SueCC

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health concerns, which mean you'll be undergoing a colonoscopy on Monday next week. It's understandable that you're feeling a little worried ahead of your appointment.

Hopefully some of the members who have been through this procedure will post to share their experiences with you but in the meantime, you can find posts on the forum by searching for the term "plenvu" in the search box at the top of the page. I will also say that it's important to remember that everyone's experiences are different so try not to be too anxious.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses for some advice and support ahead of your appointment, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. They will be happy to listen and offer any information they can.

I hope things go well for you on Monday. Let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Sue I've had 2 Colonoscopies one was earlier this year ,firstly if you've heard people say the Plenvu is terrible that would be an understatement ,I vomited the second lot back up, it was that bad, I used a straw at first but I just wanted rid of it quicker so I just drank it fast ,obviously too fast so this was the worst part about having the Colonoscopy because for me that wasn't bad at all ,I had sedation both times and all I had was a bit of cramping and it seemed like it was over in no time ,both times I have found out on the day my results which on both occasions were fine ,my Colonoscopy was early on the morning so I'd stopped going to the toilet before I went to bed on the night and there was no more after that .

  • Thank you Jenn and Jenny, So Jenny is the idea not to drink it too fast, I’m really dreading it more than the colonoscopy, I start the first one tomorrow at 6pm. I’ve not eaten much today hoping that will help but drinking plenty of fluids, did they still do the colonoscopy after you were sick, I’d hate to have to do it all again. Jenn my appointment is Sunday not Monday and thanks for suggesting the search box, I find it hard to work but got a few tips from it. Thank you both xx

  • Hi Sue yes I would definitely say don't rush it because it will make you feel sick ,I had 2 different flavoured powders the first one was awful but I managed to keep it down ,the second one I thought I could rush it ,I only drank half of it when I started feeling awful ,I tried hard to keep it down but I couldn't but actually it still worked ,I never told the hospital what had happened and I just went and it was fine ,and like I say you should find out on Sunday what they find or don't find ,I hope all goes well any questions just ask ...

  • Thanks Jenny, I may have questions tomorrow once I start plenvu but thanks for your answers now xx

Just got home after my colonoscopy so thought I’d give an update. The Plenvu I found ok, in the fridge, slurp 4 slurps through a straw and a mouthful of Lucazade, wasn’t a problem then drink the 500 ml  of water. Next dose was at 6am so did the same with Plenvu but drank the water too fast as wanted to get back into bed, brought it all back up. Went ahead for colonoscopy and luckily the bowel was clean. Now for the pain… it was horrendous even with sadation and gas&air, it took a long time cos he couldn’t fine my appendix then lost the one polyp he took of so had to find it, I had 2 clips put in where the polyp was. But the good news is no cancer. So now I’m home I’m happy. Best of luck to you all xx

  • Sounds like youve had a rough day Sue ,but its so good when you get the news no cancer ,it makes it all worthwhile knowing you don't have to think about it anymore , well done x
