Lump on son's neck. Blood test came back positive for glandular fever but I'm worried it's something more

My ten year old developed a lump on one side of his neck in Sept with no obvious signs of throat infection. It did feel and look like a gland/lymph node but just on one side.

Some other symptoms he has been having include -

night sweats, fatigue, trouble eating, dark circles under eyes

I ended up taking him to out of hours gp around six weeks ago who upon examination saw pus on his tonsil on the same side and he had antibiotics but the lump did not disappear.

A couple of weeks ago I took him back to his own GP who ran bloods and it came back as positive for Glandular Fever.

Tonight I can still feel the lump and see it when he is sitting beside me. He has been tired his week.

Part of me is wondering should I push further or just accept the glandular fever diagnoses although in my opinion he did not seem to have much symptoms for this unless there is varying levels. I remember being off school for weeks with it.

  • Hi Mumblelina,

It's always worrying to find a lump or anything like that on a young child and you did the right thing taking him to the out of hours GP and then going back to your own GP when you saw that the lump hadn't disappeared. It's good that they ran blood tests and that you now have a few more answers given that he tested positive for glandular fever. As you are still worried though, don't hesitate to ask questions to his GP just to get the reassurance you need at the moment that this lump is linked to the glandular fever and nothing more. It is worth having this in-depth conversation for peace of mind and if you feel you need to speak to someone else about this, it is always worth considering getting a second opinion

I hope your little one feels better soon and that he won't need to be off school for too long!
