50 years old 4.2cm ovarian complex cyst

Evening all,

guess I’m just looking for reassurance.

went for smear test two weeks ago & happened to mention slight bloody mucous once.  I started HRT & had mirena coil fitted in Aug 2023.

until this point my periods were regular & I was only referred to gynaecologist as I have suffered hormonal migraines since age of 18. I also had brain fog and sleep issues so they suggested HRT. I had to have coil fitted not progesterone tablets due to hormonal aspect.

i had full bloods done two weeks ago as part of a well woman check as I turned 50 - all normal and my smear is normal

had a bit of a shock when I was put on two week pathway, had an ultrasound last Tuesday & appointment with gynaecologist on Friday. She told me there is a 4.2cm cyst on my left ovary but it is complex as it has a 1.2 septation and a 6.7 thickening (all this left me so confused - also I was on my own so struggled to take it all in)

she did a biopsy there and then and did bloods for a CA125 I think.

sincefriday I have spent the entire weekend on an emotional rollercoaster and have now convinced myself I have ovarian cancer!!
looking back she did make some encouraging remarks such as no family history and the nurse said 99% of patients have nothing wrong with them but that’s not what google is telling me.

doesn’t help that as we remortgaged last month and changed our life insurance policies we decided to do a will and the first draft has just arrived in my inbox! Can’t help but think negatively about that.

I do have some bloating and pelvic pain but not sure if that was there before or due to the biopsy she took on Friday??

any words of wisdom re timescales/ outcomes would be much appreciated

booked in for an mri scan next week too

  • Welcome to the forum TollyH although I'm sorry about to hear about the complex cyst that's been found on your ovary.

I know this must be worrying but if you can, try to stay calm until you know more. I know that won't be easy, but I hope some of the tips and advice we have on how to cope with waiting for news will help to steady your nerves whilst you wait.

Our members know how difficult this time this can be, so you are not alone, and hopefully it won't be long until you receive some support and advice.

If it would help to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very understanding and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

In the meantime, we're wishing you all the best with your MRI and hope the results from all your tests will bring good news when they come through.

    Kind regards,
