Could it be skin cancer?

At the beginning of October, a smooth pink, itchy lump appeared on my hand which I initially thought was a wart or possibly a mole. However, its appearance has changed and is now quite rough on the surface with a red ring around it.  I knocked it this morning and it now has a small blood spot in the centre. Last week, I visited my GP who attempted to squeeze it - I nearly shot through the roof!. I have no idea why he did this as there doesn't look like there's anything it in to be squeezed out!  I mentioned that it very much resembled an SCC that my mum had removed from her leg, but my GP was adamant it is not. He believes it is an infection and prescribed a one-week course of Flucloxacillin, and told me to return if there was no improvement. I am quite worried as the area is very tender to touch or if I catch it.. I have two more days of antibiotics left, but I have yet to see any improvement.  I am hoping he is going to refer me to Dermatology but have a feeling I'll be fobbed off...

  • Hi SueMacD22,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand the uncertainty being worrying - and I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with the GP.

If you're concerned about seeing that doctor again, you can always ask for a second opinion and ask to see someone different - this may give you more confidence.

I hope that you're able to get the answers you need.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Thanks Ben.  I contacted the surgery again today as after the course of antibiotics there has been no change.  The GP I spoke to was surprised I'd been put on antibiotics and shocked when I said the first GP I saw was squeezing it!  GP today said it's got to come off ASAP (thinks it's either SCC or keratoacanthoma) and I'm now on the two-week cancer pathway so I will get an appointment for Dermatology very soon.
