Awaiting results..

I have had bad 'IBS' for years. Around the end of August, I noticed a  lot of blood in my stools, constant diarrhea and crippling fatgiue. Had an examination and nothing was found, so was asked to do blood tests, which all came back clear within 3 days, a FIT Test and Calprotectin. It's now been over 2 weeks and the GP receptionist told me, these tests can take a long time and I should ring back after 3 weeks. Has anyone else experienced this? I was unfortunately, under the impression, results take two weeks.

Not sure, if I should take the no news, is good news approach or if it's taking longer for a worrying reason.

  • Hi Wigpool34,

I don't think you should read anything into the fact that your results are taking a bit longer to come through than you expected - sometimes no news is just no news but it's always frustrating though to have to wait longer than you had expected and it's normal then for our minds to wonder why this is taking a long time. It's reassuring that your blood tests have come back clear. We have information on our website on the FIT test which mentions that results normally take 1 or 2 weeks so you did well to get in touch with your GP receptionist and you should definitely ring them back if you haven't heard anything back in the next week or so.

Waiting for results is the hardest thing as many of our members will know only too well and we have helpful tips on our website to help you cope while waiting for news. I think it's fair to say that results normally take about two weeks but it can be a bit less or more than that and there can be all sorts of logistical/administrative reasons for these delays as well as sometimes variations depending on where you live. Rest assured though these delays are not connected in any way with the actual details of your results.

I hope that you will hear from other community members who have experienced similar symptoms and had the same tests too in the past and that they will be along shortly and share their experience with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that you get your results in the next few days and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,
